ReachMedia

Assaf Feldman and Sajid Sadi
ReachMedia is a system that supports on-the-move interaction with every day objects. The system is built around a wireless wristband with an RFID reader and accelerometers. The wristband detects physical objects that the user is interacting with, and retrieves relevant and personalized information via a smart phone. The user can then have a hands and eyes free interaction with the application by using a unique combination of slight gestural input and audio output.

Inktuitive by Pranav Mistry

Pranav Mistry
Despite the advances and advantages of computer-aided design tools, the traditional pencil and paper continue to exist as the most important tools in the early stages of design. The goal of the project 'Inktuitive' is to combine the intuitive process of creation that is inherent in paper and pencil with the power of computing that the digital design tools provide. Inktuitive also extends the natural work-practice of using physical paper by giving the pen the ability to control the design in physical three-dimensional space, freeing it from its tie to the paper. The intuition of pen and paper are still present, but lines are be captured and translated into shapes in the digital world. The physical paper is augmented with overlaid digital strokes. Furthermore, the platform provides a novel interaction mechanism for drawing and designing using above the surface pen movements. Inktuitive' is an intuitive physical design workspace that aims to bridge the gap and bring together the conventional design tools such as paper and pencil with the power and convenience of the digital tools for design.

What is MOTOBLUR and what will it do to Android?

motorola-android
Though I do not consider myself to be a Motorola fan, it’s interesting to see the MOTOBLUR, a new customized version of Android OS, developed by Motorola, and probably its' biggest hope to revive some of the company's lost fortunes...
Visually, MOTOBLUR is a nice looking OS, with a clear focus on social networks. The home screen is holding all the popular social network feeds at screen (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and of course emails) allowing easy reading and simple status posting.
It looks nice, but I guess it’s nothing more than another widgets styled fancy UI.
motorola-cliq-dext-2
Motorola took Palm’s synergy vision and improved it a little bit: MOTOBLUR continuously (and automatically) syncs your phone and email contacts with your friends from Facebook™, MySpace and Twitter.
Beyond the homepage gimmick, all the feeds are listed in one unified inbox screen, which may become helpful.
Like Ping.fm, you can quickly update your status across all of these sites in one move. Other social networking features – like wall posts, photo sharing, and quick posting of videos to YouTube are also supported.
In addition, MOTOBLUR continuously updates and backs up the information into a secure environment. Again, not a real innovation, but a cool feature.
What’s going on behind the scenes?
Technically speaking, Motorola took the Android 1.5 source and customized it. Yes, that means that once you use Motorola’s MOTOBLUR, you are not running the version that was released by Google’s developers…
Is it a good thing to do?
I’m not sure.
Based on my previous experiences with Motorola user interface, I think that it’s better to stick with the original… maybe a customized shell (a-la Sense UI) is better, as it keeps the original source of the OS.
In any event, the first 2 devices to run MOTOBLUR will be: CLIQ (North America) and DEXT (International).

TaPuMa

What is TaPuMa
TaPuMa is a digital, tangible public map that allows people to use their own objects to display pertinent

information on the map.
Where does TaPuMa come from?
TaPuMa comes from the class MAS834 Tangible Interfaces in December 2006. Pranav Mistry, Chaochi

Chang, Tsuyoshi Kuroki and Kahn Jekarl came up with the idea of TaPuMa and made a prototype of it,
and submitted a paper to CHI Work-In-Progress. After the submission, the team has decided to take a next step to MIT TaPuMa.

Below example illustrates how TaPuMa will work in an airport.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lee has decided that he would like to have a cigarette but knows he must find a
designated area to smoke.  He places his package of cigarettes on TaPuMa to find out where to
smoke.  A radial menu appears around the package and displays two options: Smoking Areas and
Stores that sell the types of cigarettes that Mr. Lee owns.  He selects Smoking Areas and then is
directed to the closest designated smoking area.

MIT TaPuMa
MIT TaPuMa is a TaPuMa which are placed in MIT. MIT TaPuMa can be used by students, guests

and neighbors of MIT. MIT TaPuMa may show information about:
- Activities, Events in MIT
- Researches in MIT
- iFind
- Available Public Transportations
  And so on.

Contributions of TaPuMa
From a practical viewpoint – TaPuMa is a renovated version of public map.

Public maps can be seen in many places but they are static and dumb.
TaPuMa provides context-aware functions on that and make them more helpful.
As a Tangible Interface – Tangible Interfaces uses special designed objects,
like RFID-tagged plastic packs. TaPuMa is the first Tangible Interface system
which can be used by everyday objects.
As a User Interface – TaPuMa realizes object-oriented interactions in the real
world. Object-oriented interactions have become a popular way in GUI, since
it can simplify the interaction and relief the ambiguity. Putting an object on
TaPuMa is like a right-click on icons on a desktop.

StatusCurrent Status of TaPuMa
We made a prototype of TaPuMa using tagged objects,

but now we are planning to use computer vision technology
to recognize different objects, like MIT cards, T passes, Cell
phones, Keys, Money, etc. on the map. Beyond that, we also
want to explore gesture based interaction techniques.

Now we have started to raise UROPs to work with.

Sparsh by pranav misrty

Sparsh

Pranav Mistry and Suranga Nanayakkara
'SPARSH' lets you conceptually transfer media from one digital device to your body and pass it to the other digital device by simple touch gestures. Our digital world -- laptop, TV, smart phone, e-book reader and all are now relying upon the cloud, the cloud of information. SPARSH explores a novel interaction method to seamlessly transfer something between these devices in a real fun way using the underlying cloud. Here it goes. Touch whatever you want to copy. Now it is saved conceptually in you. Next, touch the device you want to paste/pass the saved content. SPARSH uses touch based interactions as just indication for what to copy, from where and where to pass it. Technically, the actual magic(transfer of media) happens on the cloud.

Speakers Pranav Mistry: MIT grad student

Pranav Mistry is the inventor of SixthSense, a wearable device that enables new interactions between the real world and the world of data.

Why you should listen to him:

Pranav Mistry is a PhD student in the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT's Media Lab. Before his studies at MIT, he worked with Microsoft as a UX researcher; he's a graduate of IIT. Mistry is passionate about integrating the digital informational experience with our real-world interactions.
Some previous projects from Mistry's work at MIT includes intelligent sticky notes, Quickies, that can be searched and can send reminders; a pen that draws in 3D; and TaPuMa, a tangible public map that can act as Google of physical world. His research interests also include Gestural and Tangible Interaction, Ubiquitous Computing, AI, Machine Vision, Collective Intelligence and Robotics.

What is Leviation

  • the phenomenon of a person or thing rising into the air by apparently supernatural means
  • movement upward in virtue of lightness
  • the act of raising (a body) from the ground by presumably spiritualistic means
